Greensboro, NC--The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1st to November 30th. Some seasons are more active than others. Hurricane climatology which looks at tropical activity overa long period of time shows a marked peak inactivity in the month of September with a decrease near the end of the season.
This increase in activity is directly related to improvingconditions for development in the tropical Atlantic with time.
Sea surface temperatures getwarmer over the summer and are ripe for providing heat energy for development and strengthen of tropical systems.
Stronger upper-level winds or wind shearthroughout the year tends to relax. This keeps the developing tropical system from being ripped apart.
