GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Red Cross is working to help the people affected by tornadoes in 14 states last week.

In North Carolina volunteers gave about 2,000 clean up and recovery supplies including gloves, hand sanitizer, storage containers, sunscreen, bug spray, first aid kits, among many other items. It also mobilized nearly 150 disaster workers over the weekend and served nearly 5,000 meals. The Red Cross is now meeting with families in Beaufort, Chowan, Perquimans, Pasquotank counties to talk about recovery plans and additional assistance they'll need in the future.

National Tornado Disaster Relief Effort from Red Cross news release:

  • Red Cross workers are helping people in Florida, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas and North Carolina.

  • Sunday night (May 4), more than 140 people stayed in Red Cross and community shelters in Alabama, Florida, Kansas and Mississippi.

  • As of Sunday, volunteers have already served 134,000 meals and snacks; provided 1,300 overnight stays in shelters; handed out more than 51,000 relief items; and provided 3,500 health and emotional support contacts.
