Man Charged DWI In I-85 Crash That Killed Tractor Trailer Driver

DAVIDSON COUNTY, N.C. -- Highway Patrol says a person has been charged in an accident that killed a tractor-trailer driver early Saturday morning in Lexington.

The crash happened around 12:30 a.m. on I-85 northbound near mile marker 92. Trooper J. Elledge says an Infiniti and another passenger vehicle were traveling at a high rate of speed when the Infiniti lost control, veered right, and hit a tractor-trailer.

Trooper Elledge says the tractor-trailer went off the interstate, flipped into an embankment, and hit a tree. The driver, 58-year-old Richard William Ferguson, died at the scene.

The driver of the Infiniti, 20-year-old Shawn McRay, was charged with driving with a revoked license, DWI, careless and reckless driving, and misdemeanor death by vehicle. Trooper Elledge says McRay and his friend who was in another passenger car were speeding.

Highway Patrol says further charges are pending while the crash is under investigation.
