The Highway Patrol said 16-year-old Gavin Taelor Ivey was driving a Lexus on Baltimore Road when he tried to pass a Ford pick-up truck in a passing zone at a high rate of speed.
The car was met by a Ford SUV traveling south. Ivey made an abrupt turn back into the right lane and began to skid. Troopers said the car then crossed the center line and crashed with the SUV.
The crash also killed two passengers in Ivey's car - both 16-year-old Todd Richard Goetaski and 16-year-old Justin Tyler McGee.
A 66-year-old man in the SUV was taken to Baptist Hospital.
Davidson County Schools issued a release about the deaths on Monday morning:
The teachers and students were very much saddened by the news. Our focus is on supporting the family, students and staff members of West Davidson High School. Guidance counselors, social workers and support staff are on campus to provide counseling and support for the staff and students.
On behalf of Davidson County Schools and The Board of Education our condolences go to the families and we are asking our school community for their thoughts and prayers for the families involved in this tragic accident and for all of the students and staff at West Davidson High School.
Investigators believe speed was a contributing factor to the crash.
