Police: Sleeping Cab Driver Crashes Into Utility Pole

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Police say a Winston-Salem cab driver fell asleep while driving and hit a utility pole.

The accident happened after 3 a.m. Friday in the 3800 block of North Liberty Street.

The wreck broke the pole and caused the telephone lines to hang low, which restricted traffic. Police closed all lanes between 14th and 16th streets for a couple hours while crews repaired the lines.

EMS took the driver, Emerson Cash, to the hospital for neck pain. No other passengers were in the car.

Cash is charged with Fail to Reduce Speed.
