NORTH CAROLINA, USA — During the summer months, some kids are known to sleep in and travel to the beach with their families, enjoying their break, while others are worried about where they're going to get their next meal.

Food insecurity is an ongoing issue in some communities and increases in the summer when kids can't rely on the meals they receive while in school.

Multiple school districts across the Triad and surrounding areas are announcing dates for their annual Summer Meals program. 

Here's when each county will provide meals to kids this summer:

Alamance-Burlington School System

The meals will be offered from June 12 through Aug. 18 and will be open to students ages 2 to 18 years old.

"We anticipate serving 1000 meals a day, including breakfast, snacks, and lunch at various sites. Spencer Brown, ABSS Child Nutrition Executive Director.  

Guilford County Schools

The summer meal program kicks off on June 20th and will conclude on Aug. 17th. Meals will be available Monday through Thursday at 20 schools, including Archer Elementary, Brightwood Elementary, Jones Elementary, Eastern High, Hairston Middle, Northeast High, Smith High, Jamestown Elementary, and Hunter Elementary just to name a few. 

Guilford County Schools (GCS) will also serve meals to students involved in summer academic programs and to community locations for families unable to get to school sites. An interactive map located on the district’s data dashboard allows families to input their zip code and find a school and community meal sites closest to them. Young people visiting meal sites are required to stay at the facility and eat their meals.

It should be noted that meals will not be available the week of July 3rd. 

Lexington High School

Lexington High School is hosting a summer meals program from June 12-July 27. 

The meals are free to anyone 18 years and younger. No ID or registration is required. There will be no meals served on July 3 through July 4.

Meals will be given out Monday-Thursday. (and on Friday, June 16)

Breakfast is served from 8:30 a.m.-9 a.m. Lunch is served from noon to 12:30 p.m.

Rockingham County Schools 

The school district is providing free breakfast and lunch to anyone under 18 from June 12 through Aug. 11. The week of July 3 - 7 the school district will be closed for the holiday. 

Feeding sites include Dalton McMichael High School, Leaksville-Spray Elementary School, and Reidsville Middle School. 

Breakfast will be from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. and lunch will be from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and walk-ins are welcome. For more information, please call Dr. Leslie Coleman-Cassell at 336-627-2691 or 434-835-6415. 

Thomasville City Schools 

Thomasville City Schools will begin their summer meal program from Monday, June 12 to August 18. It should be noted that meals will not be served the week of Monday, July 3rd through Friday, July 7th in observance of the July 4th holiday. Meals will be provided to all children aged 18 and under free of charge. 

Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools 

The summer meals program with WS/FCS will run from June 20 to Aug 11. The meals are free to anyone 18 years and younger.

It includes school-based meal sites and mobile delivery to other places in the community. They will be closed on July 4. Find out more on the school district's website.
