STATESVILLE, N.C. -- An army veteran and his wife are basking in the glory of a six-figure pay day from a scratch off ticket.
It sounds as if Terry McClelland and his wife, Terry, are struck with good luck and that might be true but if you couldn't tell from the beginning of this sentence, their names are a bit of a coincidence.
“I did not believe it. I made him show me ID," said Terry's wife, Terry, who's back in college getting her doctorate in psychology.
The McClelland's have shared a lot of chuckles over their 25 years of marriage but their latest laugh was no coincidence.
"It's the luck of the draw," said Terry the husband, a 22-year Army Veteran.
It was a normal Saturday by all accounts, Terry or "Mac" as he goes by, ran errands before stopping at the Speedway gas station on Turnersburg Highway to buy a couple of scratch off tickets.
They've won big before, hitting the $10,000 powerball years ago.
But Saturday's scratch off changed their lives together.
"Well, we won $250,000," calmly said Terry.
"My heart fluttered," said Mac as he recalled scratching off the ticket. "I couldn't hardly talk!"
After claiming their prize money on Monday in Raleigh, the McClelland's are back home in unfamiliar territory, sitting on $173,754.
It didn't take long for Terry to realize where the money was going.
"My first thing was, what can I do to help?"
Their plan is to start a non-profit, aimed at freeing people from addiction, a problem that plagues more than 20 million Americans and their families, including the McClelland's.
"My daughter, she has struggled with substance abuse for quite a few years and I know it close hand," said Terry. "I know the things that people go through."
It's her hope that this non-profit can launch in 2018, Terry has already started creating a business plan.
You could call this couple's victory more than luck, it's pure coincidence, especially after they turn their winnings into other people's blessing.
