WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A family bakery has opened a second Triad location that will not only have cupcakes, but a place to eat them, too.

Ava’s Cupcakes is selling its specialty cupcakes at 1539 Hanes Mall Blvd. in Winston-Salem in a strip of shops across the boulevard from CarMax and north of Interstate 40. The 2,000-square-foot location is much larger than Ava’s Clemmons location, which had only a few small tables with little ambiance.

Michelle Spell, a pastry chef who owns the business, said the new location can comfortably seat 20 in a café-type setting.

Spell opened her first location about a decade ago in Rockaway, New Jersey – a location that remains open. She and husband Steven discovered the Triad on stops during trips between New Jersey and Florida and decided to make Winston-Salem home about two years ago.
