Tobaccoville, N.C.-- A Virginia woman left North Carolina with a big deposit in her bank account after spending $20 on a scratch-off ticket. Carrie Hughes of Fancy Gap, Va. won $1 million playing the $4,000,000, Platinum Payout scratch-off game.

Hughes said she bought the ticket at Pete’s Grocery on Doral Drive in Tobaccoville. She had the choice of taking a $1 million annuity that has 20 payments of $50,000 a year or a lump sum of $600,000.

Hughes decided to take the lump sum and after paying the required state and federal taxes, she took home $417,012. That's not bad for a $20 chance.
