Abandoned Kern Street School in Thomasville may have been started by someone: fire officials

The Fire Marshal's portion of the fire investigation has been completed and it's believed that the fire began on the second floor.

THOMASVILLE, N.C. — Kern Street School caught fire for the second time in two months back in November and December. The most recent fire happened on Dec. 31, 2020, and we are now getting some details as to what may have caused it.

Officials said the Fire Marshal's portion of the fire investigation has been completed and it's believed that the fire began on the second floor.

They went on to say that they believe human hands were involved in the ignition of the fire though they mentioned they could not confirm the intent of who may be involved.

Witnesses stated that homeless people sometimes stayed in the structure, to which officials said they could not rule out that maybe someone set a fire in the building for heating, cooking, or a light source.

Thomasville Police Department is still investigating and speaking to witnesses and neighbors to see if anyone can offer any pertinent information.
