Company Uses Hawks, Falcons To Scare Away Pesky Birds

SANTA MONICA, C.A. (CBS) -- Alyssa and Michael Bordonaro have a different way of scaring away pigeons, seagulls, and other birds that annoy folks around southern California. They're both trained falconers, and they use the skill to train birds of prey to scare away the birds of pest.

"A lot of film sets call, we get a lot of photo shoots," Alyssa Bordonaro says, "[They] want to do things with the birds."

The Bordonaros raise hawks and falcons, and train them from home. They're company is called "Hawk Pros". They scare away bird pests at local businesses. They say the mere presence of the predators keeps the pests away.

"Prey birds are in the wild. They're dealing with the predators everyday so they know what a predator looks like," Bordonaro says, "That's why the fake owls don't work because they know it's not real."

The Bordonaros bring the birds to the area for several hours a day over a few weeks. They do this about 12 times a month to start, and then taper off depending on the situation. Then the unwanted birds stop showing up.

Hawk Pros is just one of several other bird abatement businesses around the country. They're raised in captivity, so they can't be released into the wild.
