SURRY COUNTY, N.C. -- Candy bar bandits were caught on camera moving, tilting, and shaking vending machines at a Surry County rest stop in order to get free snacks.

The Surry County Sheriff's Office says the crime happened on February 25, but detectives are still trying to identify the thieves.

Detective Ashley Doiel says the boys stole about three snacks from the machines at the Welcome Center located at the Virginia-North Carolina line on I-77.

The boys can be seen tilting and shaking the vending machines on the video. At about the 2:30 minute mark, one of them even "whips" and "nae naes" to celebrate getting his free snack!

The machines are part of a federally funded program that helps the blind and handicap become self-sufficient in earning money.

Doiel says the sheriff's office waited to release the surveillance video because the boys looked young. She says now, detectives believe the boys could be 18 or older, because at least two of them have tattoos.

Detectives ruled out that the boys are Surry County students after reaching out to all School Resource Officers in the county.
