SURRY COUNTY, N.C. -- A man on a stolen tractor led Surry County deputies on a chase Tuesday morning.

Deputies say a homeowner on Stanford Church Road called the sheriff's office and said someone had taken her Kubota lawn tractor with front loader from her home overnight.

As deputies were responding, someone reported seeing a suspicious person driving a tractor out of the woods to a house, and the tractor-operator was requesting to use a phone.

Deputies began arriving at the home, and that's when the tractor driver took off.

A deputy and a DMV officer chased the tractor for a short time before the suspect hit the deputy's patrol car and then rammed through a gate.

Benjamin Hall was identified as the suspect. He was arrested and charged with felony larceny, felony possession of stolen goods, misdemeanor assault on a government official, and more.

He is in jail under a $25,000 secured bond.
