Caught on Camera | Man steals money from Mayflower cash register in Asheboro

A man steals a wad of money from a cash register at Mayflower in Asheboro after asking an employee to grab something from the back.

ASHEBORO, N.C. — A shameless crime caught on camera.

A man opens the cash register at an Asheboro restaurant, stealing the cash inside.

WFMY News 2's Itinease McMiller talked to the store manager about the crime and found out this isn't the first time this has happened.

Mayflower manager Wanda Shutt said someone stole from her restaurant Saturday evening.

Surveillance video from the robbery shows a clear shot of the suspect.

"I mean that's bold," Shutt said.

First, the man is sitting on the bench, asking for something from the back, Then, he gets up, and peeks outside to see if anyone's coming and goes for the register.

He lifts it and struggles to get the drawer open but when he does, he takes a wad of cash and casually walks out.

"The two boys that I had working in there [who] are phenomenal workers and very trustworthy. The guy asked them to get a piece of carrot cake for him and as soon as he was out of sight, he asked the other guy to tell him two pieces instead of one and the other guy went out to go tell him," Shutt explained.

That's when Shutt says the suspect got away with more than a thousand dollars.

"We had a busy Saturday in take out it was insane the phone was constantly ringing and this was right after everything settled down and the boys were trying to restock everything and help the next group of people coming in and he just happened to catch us at a weak moment," Shutt said.

Unfortunately, this isn't the first time some money-hungry thief popped open this register. Someone did the same thing back in 2021.

A guy with a mask on did the same exact thing. Popped the drawer open, took some cash, and walk out.

Shutt said police never caught the suspect in the first incident.

"We believe it's the same man but we're not 100%," Shutt said. "Police have a couple of suspects but nothing concrete right now."

Shutt said they're now installing plastic dividers and the drawers will require a key to unlock.

"It makes you very leery of helping anyone or keeping your eye on everyone that matches that description when they come in the door. It's very hard for us because we try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt," Shutt continued.

If you recognize the man in the video, please call Asheboro police.
