Mom Charged in Elkin House Fire That Killed Son With Autism

Investigators say the mother's actions during the fire directly caused the death of her son.

SURRY COUNTY, N.C. -- Surry County Sheriff's Deputies say a mother has been charged in an Elkin house fire that killed her autistic son.

The fire happened in January at a home on CC Camp Road.

Investigators say Maria Deneane Kidd called 911 to say her home was on fire and her autistic child was still inside. Firefighters responded and found the boy's body inside the home.

Detectives say the house was a "hoarding situation" with no clear paths inside the home. Investigators say the living conditions posed an injury risk to the child and the sheer volume of stuff inside helped the fire spread.

The lead detective on the case told us what the mother "did and did not do" during the fire directly caused the death of her son.

Emergency officials originally reported to us that the mother tried saving her son.

The sheriff's office says Kidd has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and felony child abuse. She received a $150,000 bond.

An exact cause of the fire is still being determined.
