ASHEVILLE — An arrest turned into a brawl early Tuesday morning when police attempted to take a man they suspected of kidnapping into custody in the Pisgah View Apartments, according to arrest warrants.
At about 3 a.m., officers with the Asheville Police Department arrested Devon Monterio King, 26, at his Granada Street apartment, where they said he was holding a woman against her will. According to a warrant, King physically restrained his victim, grabbed her body and tore her clothing.
When police arrived, they found King had barricaded himself inside his bedroom with the woman he's accused of kidnapping, a Buncombe County magistrate wrote in a recommendation for domestic violence bond. King is currently on probation for assaulting the same woman, and he has been convicted of assault four times since 2009, according to the magistrate.
King fought — "kicking, biting, attempting to strike and wrestle" — three separate officers attempting to arrest him, police wrote in warrants alleging that King bit one officer hard enough to leave a bruise and a bite mark.
During the struggle, King damaged the right rear window of a police patrol vehicle and swung an expandable baton at one of the arresting officers, according to warrants. As a result, police charged him with a felony count of assault with a deadly weapon against a government official.
The baton, manufactured by Armament Systems and Procedures, is the same weapon that APD "issues to all sworn members of the department," according to the agency's use of force policy. Warrants don't specify whether King was wielding the officer's weapon against him during the alleged assault.
King also faces a felony charge of first degree kidnapping and misdemeanor charges of assault on a female, resisting public officers, assault against a government official and injury to personal property. He is currently being held in the Buncombe County Detention Center and is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.
