CONROE, Texas - Most people park cars or trucks in their driveway. One homeowner in Conroe sometimes has a spaceship.
"I don't think I ever grew up," said Karl Kuhlenschmidt, who's a maintenance technician at a local school district by day.
He's a master builder on the side for a group called Battlestar Raven, which honors the classic 1978 TV series, "Battlestar Galactica."
"I was 8 years old when this show was on," Kuhlenschmidt said. "Being a little kid, all we wanted was to have a viper. We played xylons and colonial warriors on the playground."
All these years later, he still wanted a viper. The idea started to come together in October 2016, except there were no blueprints for the cockpit.
"What we went on was just drawings, sketches, photos that were grainy black and white from 1978," he said.
The cockpit itself debuted at Comicpalooza 2017 at the George R. Brown Convention Center. Just this weekend, the whole ship -- the colonial viper -- came together in his driveway.
"Even when the garbage truck came by, he kind of slowed down," Kuhlenschmidt said.
The goal for the whole viper is Comicpalooza 2018.
"This is for the fans," he said. "This is for the kids that were 8 years old when the show came on. Now they're in their 40s and 50s, and it still brings a smile to their face."
