Harris County COVID-19 Relief Fund website back open after crashing Tuesday

Public encouraged to continue to apply until 10 p.m. on Wednesday

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — WEDNESDAY 5 PM UPDATE: A day after the online system was overwhelmed by applications, the Harris County COVID-19 Relief Fund website is back open, Harris County Commissioner Precinct 2 Adrian Garcia's office said Wednesday afternoon.

The public may again visit the website and apply for financial assistance until 10 p.m. Wednesday.

A spokesman for Garcia said, "You can apply right now, there's no wait."

The spokesman said applications can be made via the internet browser on a smart phone.

Applications can also be made by calling 832-848-0214, but Garcia's spokesman said there may be a wait via that method.

PREVIOUSLY: More than 100,000 applications have been submitted for Harris County COVID-19 Relief Fund financial assistance, according to county commissioners.

The $30 million fund was set up to help those struggling due to the economic fallout caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

HarrisCountyRelief.org began accepting the second round of applicants at 6 a.m. Tuesday, as well as the call center for over-the-phone submissions.

Residents quickly flooded the website, causing it to crash within an hour and other hours. KHOU 11 received several calls and messages from applicants complaining they were getting an error message on the website.

Due the technical issues, commissioners suspect some applications may have been repeats.

If you're concerned your application wasn't received, Harris County Pct. 1 Commissioner Rodney Elis said reach out.

“If they’re worried their application did not go through, call back and ask,” said Ellis. “Or you know what? Just apply again.”

Harris County officials acknowledged the issue, posting the following message on the HarrisCountyRelief.org homepage:

“Due to high volume of traffic, we are experiencing slow downs on the Harris County COVID-19 Relief Fund online application. We are currently receiving application submissions. If you are submitting your application and receiving a 502 and 504 error message, your application was likely submitted. We will confirm your submission via text or e-mail by tomorrow morning.

We apologize for the inconvenience. Our team is working to resolve these issues as quickly as possible."

It's possible the malfunction may have been a switchboard issue in the area, official said. However, they're still assessing the issues.

Harris County Pct. 2 Commissioner Adrian Garcia said the goal is to help the most vulnerable people in the community.

Unlike the first time, relief funds will not be given to residents on a first come, first serve basis. Instead all approved applicants will be entered into a drawing.
