THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2020

2 p.m. - Gov. Roy Cooper and the COVID-19 task force gave an update on the state's response to the virus. North Carolina had its second-largest day for new cases on Thursday. Here are some notes from the briefing:

- NCDHHS Secretary Dr. Mandy Cohen went over the four key metrics North Carolina is watching closely to ease restrictions.

  • COVID-like syndromic cases -- This trend has been going down but remains elevated. (Gets a yellow line)
  • Cases -- Trending up within the last month. (Gets a red X)
  • Percentage of positive tests -- This line remains level, but is closer to 7% rather than the 5% number we were at over the summer. (Gets a yellow line)
  • Hospitalizations -- Level but remain high (Gets a yellow line)

- Cohen said she's concerned as we enter the colder months and more people will be gathering indoors.

- NC health officials will be releasing holiday gathering guidelines. Cohen said people should not host gatherings if they are sick, have been diagnosed with COVID-19, or if they have been exposed to COVID-19.

- State leaders are encouraging people to wear masks even in small gatherings with people you may know, but don't live with.

- Cooper said they will have an announcement about the state's next steps moving forward soon, but did not give a specific date. Phase 3 runs through Friday, Nov. 13.

- Cooper said they don't want to move "backward" by putting in more restrictions, as some other countries are currently doing. He said the reason North Carolina hasn't experienced a spike at any point is because we put restrictions in place early.

12:30 p.m. - North Carolina DHHS released the latest COVID-19 data for the state. Thursday marked the second-highest day for new cases on record (2,859). Oct. 29 remains the highest day for cases. Cone Health hospitalizations have declined slightly since last week. Phase 3 lasts through Friday, Nov. 13 unless revised or repealed. Gov. Roy Cooper and task force will give an update on coronavirus at 2 p.m.

STATEWIDE NUMBERS:

  • NEW CASES: 2,859
  • TOTAL CASES: 285,661
  • CURRENT STATE HOSPITALIZATIONS: 1,193
