1:15 p.m. - Alamance County sees outbreak at nursing home facility

Alamance County Health identified an outbreak at assisted living facility Blakey Hall in Elon.

Health officials said as of Friday afternoon two coronavirus cases have been confirmed at the nursing home, made of one staff member and one resident.

State health officials define an outbreak as two or more COVID-19 cases in a congregate setting.

Alamance officials said the staff member is an Alamance County resident.

“We contacted the Alamance County Health Department to report the results, as well as to seek any additional guidance once we received the results,” said executive director Ed Weeks. “We also communicated with our residents’ families and responsible parties to inform them of our results.”

Weeks said the cases are concentrated in the nursing home’s special care unit for dementia residents.

North Carolina entered reopening Phase 2.5 over the Labor Day weekend. Phase 2.5 allowed gyms, museums, playgrounds, and some recreational businesses like trampoline parks to reopen. The state could enter Phase 3 as early as Friday, Sept. 11, as long as health officials continue to see COVID-19 trends going down. Under Phase 3, bars and movie theaters would be allowed to reopen. The state is hovering just above 6% total positive COVID-19 tests. State health officials want that number to be at 5% to continue loosening restrictions.

FACTS NOT FEAR

Remember facts, not fear when talking about the coronavirus. You should take the safety measures recommended by health leaders to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Abide by the three W's. That means wearing a mask, washing your hands, and waiting at least six feet from another person. You also want to avoid touching your face and make sure to cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and throw it away.
