Left Lane Not Legally a Passing Lane in North Carolina

North Carolina does not have an impeding traffic law and there are no minimum speed limits posted on North Carolina interstates.

An Indiana State Police officer is going viral on social media after posting that he pulled over a woman for going too slow in the left lane.

"Again...if there are vehicles behind you, you must move to the right lane to allow them to pass," Wheeles tweeted.

That may be the law in Indiana, but in North Carolina it's not. Trooper Brandon Baker with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol says we do not have an impeding traffic law and there are no minimum speed limits posted on North Carolina interstates.

In North Carolina, the left lane is not legally considered a passing lane. The state is one of only a few left that has no law addressing the matter.

Nevertheless, Trooper Baker says it's a courtesy to treat the left lane as a passing lane and any driver causing a hazard, including by driving too slow or blocking traffic, could be ticketed for that.

On Twitter, thousands of people praised the Trooper in Indiana for his actions.
