UNION COUNTY, N.C. -- One person was killed in a plane crash in Monroe.

Late Friday afternoon around 4:10, authorities say a small plane crashed in a rural area of Union County off of Poplin Road. Authorities say the scene is north of Highway 74.

According to the Union County Sheriff's Office, the aircraft was an ultra light and had just one occupant, who was pronounced deceased on the scene.

The name of the victim has not yet been released. Monroe Police say the body will go to Charlotte for an autopsy.

The FAA will investigate.
