Firefighters were eventually able to get the fire under control. The Winston-Salem Fire Department said a preliminary investigation revealed that the fire was likely caused by an electrical malfunction in the wall of one of the units. The department said the fire easily spread because the apartments have shared attics.

Darletris Nelson says her daughters unit was destroyed.

"All furniture, clothes, her stuff, it's mostly smoke damage so her stuff is not going to be able to be recuperated."

Nelson says her 10-year-old granddaughter thankfully noticed the smoke creeping into her apartment, and her family ran out.

"My mom said 'come on lets go' and I tried to go get some of our stuff but she said 'lets just go,' and we ran," Nelson's granddaughter said.

The Red Cross is assisting those displaced. No one was hurt.
