We all have to watch how much salt we're consuming, especially as we get older. But that doesn't mean you have to resign yourself to flavorless food for the rest of your life. Consumer Reports has some tasty alternatives that you'll want to consider.

One of the choices you may not have considered is hot sauce. A recent study showed that people who ate spicy food ate a half-teaspoon less of salt daily than people who didn't eat spicy foods. They also had lower blood pressure. Just be careful about which hot sauce you use. Consumer Reports mentions Trader Joe's Chili Pepper Sauce as a solid no-sodium choice.

Fresh or dried herbs can not only provide flavor but vitamins and minerals as well. A quarter-cup of fresh parsley will give you a quarter of your daily vitamin C and vitamin A needs. A tablespoon of dried chervil will also give you some calcium and potassium.

You may use some lemon on your seafood. But both lemon and lime can perk up a number of dishes. Try it on chicken, vegetables, or even whole grains to add some zest without salt.
