Lightning Storm Doesn't Have To Be Near You To Hurt You

You can be miles away and still get hurt.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Thunderstorms are a common summer occurrence here. But in Los Angeles thunderstorms are rare. Sunday one man died and 13 others were injured after lightning from the thunderstorm struck Venice beach. The last time lightning killed a person in Southern California was 2009. Take a look at this map showing the number of lightning deaths this by state year. As of yesterday,16 people died due to lightning the most in Florida. Only two of the 16 deaths happened on beaches. Most happened while people did everyday things...like gardening or washing their cars. When you hear that you think: if its storming, why are people outside?

But it doesn't have to be storming for there to be lightning danger. 2 Wants To Know and Meterologist Grant Gilmore explain you may not see clouds but there could still be danger. Lightning can strike whenever a TStorm is nearby. In fact, it can sometimes strike several miles away from a storm if it travels outside of a clouds on its way to the ground
