Every time a disaster hits, there's an influx of people trying to scam others. The state says they're monitoring a growing number of malicious emails. And state experts have some recommendations that can keep you from getting scammed.
- Check all email and web addresses carefully. Scammers can imitate legitimate sources incredibly well.
- Don't click any links in emails from anyone unless you've verified who sent the email.
- Make sure all your anti-virus and anti-phishing software is up to date.
- Know the warning signs. Scammers may try to pose as FEMA or IRS agents. Know that representatives from FEMA, IRS, or any federal department will not reach out to you asking for personal banking information, social security numbers, or registration numbers.
