Susie's Journey: From Abuse To Advocate

A little dog led to big changes in North Carolina's laws regarding the treatment of animals.

Greensboro, NC --Back in August 2009, the Triad met adog that would change the face of animaltreatment in our state.

Someone foundthe three-month-old puppy in a Greensboro park. She had been beaten, burned, and left for dead.Someone found her and took her to the Guilford County Animal Shelter, and after a lot of T.L.C,Susie,and her 'mom'Donna Laurence are making a difference today.

After Donnaadopted Susie, sheand a group of people in the Triad led the charge to get state laws changed. They said they felt the penalty for animal crueltywasn't strict enough to prevent abusive behavior.

That led to Susie's law, which then-Governor Bev Perdue signed into law in June of 2010. Now, animal cruelty chargesareno longer a misdemeanor and can include jail time.

Susie's story has since brought more awareness to all kinds of animal cruetly awareness.

Since then, Susie has become sort of a celebrity of sorts. She's got amovie, books, a stuffed animal, and more! The portions of the proceeds from Susie's projects benefitSusie's Hope.
