The NC DMV is charging an extra fee? Nope, you're on the wrong website!

They look REALLY similar. But if there is no .gov you're in the wrong place & will pay more.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — When you need to get something from the DMV, you could go to a .com website or a .gov one.

What's the difference? Usually about 20 bucks!

DMV.com or DMV.org and NCDOT.gov look similar when you pull them up. But only one is the official site and the others are run by a third party.

In fact if you look closely you'll see a disclaimer on their site, you'll see they're  not affiliated with the government.  The problem is these sites will charge you a fee for services like license renewal -- and even free information guides that you could get  from the DMV.

Sound like a scam? Well legally speaking, it's not. It's perfectly legal. But the North Carolina Attorney General doesn't want you to mistake it-- his advice--always look for the .gov on the end of the website address.
