Ashley Academy, School Involved In Federal Complaint, Holds Tour To Show Off Improvements

Now, classrooms have HVAC systems equipped with humidity sensors throughout every classroom.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Before school starts parents have a checklist, but schools have to have a checklist too.

Make sure buses are good to go, making sure teachers are prepared, and on Ashley Academy's checklist, making sure the air for their students is safe.

"There were concerns. There was mold identified -- we tried to be transparent about that. But we also found a solution for it," said Winston-Salem Forsyth County Superintendent, Dr. Beverly Emory.

Emory said they were notified about a possible air-quality problem in February. It is a problem they say they've been working on all summer to fix it.

Now, classrooms have HVAC systems equipped with humidity sensors throughout every classroom.

Those cost $1.5 million.

A big sell, is the fact the new systems draw outside air in, instead of circulating the inside air over and over.

However, some parents and community members, aren't happy with that solution.

Earlier this month, they filed a Federal Racial Bias Complaint to the Department of Education.

It can be summed up in one sentence.

"Tthe District's inadequate and sluggish response to the Ashley crisis cannot be explained by any reason other than intentional racial discrimination," claimed the Complaint.

School officials didn't respond directly to the complaint.

Instead they said they have had some requests to transfer out. They are urging parents to see the improvements before they make a decision
