RALEIGH, N.C. -- Attorney General Roy Cooper announced his plans to run for North Carolina Governor Wednesday.

Democrat Roy Cooper has served as the Attorney General for North Carolina since 2000. Before serving as Attorney General he served as a North Carolina Senator and in the N.C. House.

Cooper graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The current Governor is Republican Pat McCrory who took office in January 2013. Prior to becoming governor, he was on Charlotte's city council and served as Mayor Pro Tem from 1993-1995. He then served as the Mayor of Charlotte for 14 years.
