Body Language Cues Of Hidden Stress

When you see body language contradictions it's a sign for you to act.

When it come to suicide awareness and knowing the signs, if you're like most people you think about severe depression and withdrawal from family, friends and life. Let's talk about the stress that flies under the radar that can possibly get people thinking that suicide is the only choice.

I'm talking about intense desperation. Typically, people who are really stressed out will start to drop hints about what's bothering them. These hints may not be obvious like a flashing warning sign. People talk about what's important to them. And they'll find ways to bring something up that's on their mind. It doesn't have to be a lengthy conversation. They can just mention the topic. For example, someone might talk about feeling lovable, hopeless or lonely. They might use different words and they'll bring it up again and again.

You can get a sense of what someone is feeling in the moment by watching their body language. Look for contradictions in what they're saying versus what they're showing. Let me give a few examples. Shaking their head "no" while saying "I'm fine." Frowning while saying, "Everything is good." Or, shrugging shoulders while saying "I'm feeling better." Let me emphasize that these contradictions don't mean that someone is going to commit suicide. These signs let you know that someone is feeling the way they're trying to project.

When you see body language contradictions then ask questions. Find out what's going on for the person. Help them find ways to cope. Help them figure out solutions. The point is the reduce feelings of desperation and get help.
