Harvest Moon is a name given to the full moon that occurs closest to the autumnal equinox, the first day of fall. Sometimes that places it before the equinox, in this case, after. The harvest name owes to the fact that this is often the time of year where farmers collect their harvest in preparation for the colder weather that lies ahead.
