Fire Destroys Beloved Methodist Church But Not The Spirit Of Its Members

Fire crews said the fire started just before 9 p.m. at Siloam United Methodist Church on East NC 47 in Denton.

Firefighters battled a major church fire in Denton Tuesday night. Fire crews said the fire happened just before 9 p.m. at Siloam United Methodist Church on East NC 47 in Denton. There were no injuries.

The Denton Fire Chief says about 12 crews worked to put out the massive fire that destroyed the church. He said the flames started on the right side of the building and spread through the sanctuary and fellowship hall. No word yet on how the fire started.

One of the church members, Robert Barr, was on the scene Tuesday night and said about 20 people worshiped at Siloam UMC. He said another church member saw the fire and called it in.

The church is a total loss. The fire chief said there were a number of reasons that this fire was able to do so much damage. He said it is an old building with large, open rooms that allowed the fire to spread quickly. He also said there are no fire hydrants in the area so firefighters had to haul water from engines to fight the blaze.

Fire crews remained on the scene late into the night.

The church has shared a number for people in the community who want to help: (336) 590-5543. A service will be held at a nearby church on Sunday.
