Former UNC Chancellor Carol Folt Named President at USC

Folt authorized the removal of the base and commemorative plaques from the "Silent Sam" Confederate Monument site on UNC's campus.

Carol Folt resigns as UNC-Chapel Hill's Chancellor

LOS ANGELES (WNCN) - Carol Folt, former chancellor at UNC-Chapel Hill, will now serve as president of the University of Southern California, the school confirmed in a tweet. 

On Jan. 14, Folt announced her plans to step down as UNC's chancellor in May. But the UNC Board of Governors voted the following day to force Folt on Jan. 31.

Folt's appointment was approved by the Board of Trustees on Wednesday morning.

She will be the 12th president of the University and the first woman to hold that position at USC.

Folt authorized the removal of the base and commemorative plaques from the Confederate Monument site in McCorkle Place. The site was once home to the Confederate monument known as "Silent Sam."

Several demonstrations and protests over the monument turned violent after the events in Charlottesville, Virginia in August 2017. 

Folt was an aquatic biology major at UC Santa Barbara before earning her doctorate in ecology from UC Davis.
