BURLINGTON, N.C. -- The thrill of the game, the excitement on the field and the cheers from the crowd! It's just part of what makes the North Carolina Special Olympics an incredible experience.

You can help give hundreds of special athletes in Alamance County the joy of competition and teamwork by attending a fundraiser this Saturday, September 29, 2018.

Jesse Justice helps organize and plan this event every year. He explains why it's so important.

"The enjoyment I get is seeing these kids have what they deserve," said Justice. "They have the time of their lives. We let them hit golf clubs, we let them swing the club; it's just a thrill seeing these kids doing what they want to do."

Proceeds from the golf tournament will completely benefit the special athletes and their efforts to compete in competitions. The money helps provide uniforms, transportation, food and even hotel stay for the upcoming county, regional and state competitions.

"The uniforms that we help them get; they run around and they're so proud of their uniforms," said Joan Kimbro. "There are about 400 athletes in Alamance County alone and we've raised over $200,000 since we started this. All the money we raise helps them get to the competition and compete at their best."

Kimbro adds three special athletes from Alamance County went on to compete at the U.S. National competition last year and with your help, even more may be able to go just as far in the games.

The Special Olympics is the world's largest sports organization for people with intellectual disabilities. Your donations will help transform lives through the joy of teamwork and sports.

The Burlington Shag Club's fundraiser for the Alamance County Special Olympics takes place this Saturday, September 29, 2018. There's a 9 a.m. shotgun start at the Indian Valley Golf Course in Burlington.

You can sponsor a $100 hole or make a donation to play. After the tournament, make sure you stay for a free catered lunch for golfers. Anyone else can eat as well, but it will cost $5. Again all proceeds will be used in Alamance County for Special Olympic Athletes.
