Friends, family, an entire community are remembering longtime fixture and icon of Mount Airy, Russell Hiatt.
Hiatt died Tuesday night at the age of 92 after a series of illnesses including cancer and heart problems.

Most people know him as a symbol of the character Floyd on The Andy Griffith Show. Hiatt cut Andy Griffith's hair when he was a young man. His son Bill Hiatt says his dad worked for 70 years before he retired in 2014 and would even go to peoples homes to cut their hair for free if they were too sick to get out.

As a tribute to Hiatt, Floyd's Barber shop on Main Street is closed until Saturday, May 7.
Flowers and fliers have been placed out front and people have been coming by in dozens to take pictures and show their respects.

Hiatt's funera was Friday at 2 pm at the Shelton Church of the Brethren, in Mt. Airy.
But before the funeral, hundreds are expected to come out on Main Street at 1pm as the funeral procession takes Russell Hiatt on one last ride past the shop that he loved so much.
