VERIFY: Can Hurricanes, Like Florence, Return?

Is it possible for a hurricane like Florence to return and strike the same area again?

VERIFY QUESTION

Florence moved out of the Carolinas - and subsequently the forecast - by the third weekend in September. But, is she gone for good?

WFMY News 2 viewer Tyler Davis asked: "I was hearing Florence is coming back this way. Is that true?"

Tyler wasn't the first person to ask that question.

VERIFY SOURCE

To VERIFY, we consulted Good Morning Show meteorologist Eric Chilton.

VERIFY PROCESS

Chilton said Florence is completely gone - no traces of it are in the Atlantic.

However, historically, there are some storms that can 'loop.' Pressure systems steer storms one way or another, and sometimes those systems force storms into loops. Typically, even if they loop around to where they struck the first time, they lose strength before reaching land.

Recent storms that have looped include Dennis in 1999, Michelle in 2001, Edouard in 2002 and Ophelia, with a double loop in 2005.

VERIFY CONCLUSION

Hurricanes can loop around and strike the same area twice, but Florence is not going to do that. She is no longer in the Atlantic.
