VERIFY QUESTION
A Monday morning routine typically involves a little trimming. Unless you're Santa Claus and need to keep a long beard, your razor probably gets a workout.
WFMY News 2 meteorologist Eric Chilton wanted to know: can you prevent a razor from rusting? If so, how?
VERIFY SOURCE
To VERIFY, we consulted Good Housekeeping's panel of health and wellness professionals. Plus, our VERIFY inquirer Eric Chilton provided his tried and tested suggestion.
VERIFY PROCESS
Good Housekeeping consulted both a master barber and a dermatologist in compiling six tips for long-lasting razors.
1) Trim first -- if you are shaving a thick beard, for example, use a trimmer before the razor to avoid clogging the razor repeatedly.
2) Prepare your skin -- exfoliate before shaving, so there is less stress on the blade.
3) Rinse blades after shaving -- soapy products, like shaving cream, can dissolve and rust the blade.
4) Store the razor in a cool, dry spot -- storing it in the shower can cause rust and bacteria build-up. Pat the razor dry after you shave, then hang it up outside the shower.
5) Put it in a case when you travel -- this will prevent the blade from dulling and damaging other items in your suitcase.
Eric's tip is most similar to number four -- simply dry the blade with a wash cloth, so water does not collect.
VERIFY CONCLUSION
Yes, a few simple steps can make a razor last longer.
