Greensboro Man Dies in Head-on Crash with Kernersville Man Driving Tanker Truck: NCHP

The North Carolina Highway Patrol confirms Alfred Cullen Matthews, 76, died on the scene after a wreck on NC Highway 49 near John Allen Road.

ROXBORO, NC (WFMY) - A Greensboro man died in a crash with a tanker truck driven by a Kernersville man in Person County Monday night.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol confirms Alfred Cullen Matthews, 76, died on the scene after a wreck on NC Highway 49 near John Allen Road. Around 8:50 p.m., Matthews was going north when his Mazda passenger car crossed the center line and hit a Kenworth tractor-trailer head-on. Ronnie Gray Penland was driving the tanker for Reliable Tank Line, LLC based out of Winston-Salem. Penland was hauling an empty tanker that had gasoline residue.

Highway Patrol said speed was a factor in the crash. Penland wasn't injured.
