Greensboro Mayor Says She Will Request Body Cam Video Linked to Death of Man in Police Custody

Greensboro Police say Aaron Andrews, 35, died after officers detained him on Monday while responding to a breaking and entering call.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Greensboro Mayor Nancy Vaughan says she plans to request the body cam footage linked to the death of a man in police custody. 

She says the family deserves to see what happened. 

Greensboro Police say Aaron Andrews, 35, died after officers detained him on Monday.

Police say officers responded to a call about someone breaking into a home on Maybank Drive. When officers arrived, they found a Andrews acting erratically. Police detained and handcuffed Andrews, and requested EMS to evaluate his condition and administer aid. 

Police say as medics prepared to transport Andrews to the hospital, he became unresponsive. EMS began lifesaving efforts, but he was later pronounced dead.

The SBI is investigating the incident to determine if all actions were in accordance with state law, which is standard protocol. 

The police department is conducting its own investigation to make sure departmental policies were followed. 

The officers involved have been placed on administrative duties while the internal investigation is ongoing.
