Greenville, NC -- A former high school teacher was given a suspended prison sentence and two years of probation for taking indecent liberties with a student. Katherine Tew, 31, was cleared Monday by a Pitt County jury of a charge of having sexual relations with the male student, who was 17 at the time. Judge William C. Griffin Jr. gave Tew a suspended sentence of six to eight months in prison and ordered her to perform 36 hours of community service and receive a psychiatric examination. The student, now a college freshman, testified that Tew sent him notes and telephoned him repeatedly before they had a sexual encounter in a parking lot at South Central High School on a night in December 2004. He claimed Tew met him in the parking lot in her pajamas, carrying a bottle of tequila. She denied it, saying she left her home after an argument with her husband but did not go to the school. Tew resigned as a teacher and cheerleading coach after she was arrested almost a year ago.Neither Tew, her lawyer nor the student commented after her conviction and sentencing.
