High Point Central Football Player Shot

A High Point Central football player was shot at a gathering at a house in High Point Monday night, police confirmed.

HIGH POINT, N.C. -- A High Point Central football player was shot at a gathering at a house in High Point Monday night, police confirmed.

Captain Mike Kirk with the High Point Police department says 16-year-old Bryan Maynard was shot. Kirk says police got a call to the hospital where Maynard was taken.

Investigators found out Maynard had been shot at a home on Kenilworth Street. Kirk says the scene cleared by the time officers got there.

Police have no suspects at this time. Kirk says police obtained a search warrant for the home and are in the process of conducting interviews.

Maynard is a football and basketball player at High Point Central High School.

Coach Wayne Jones says it was a tough day at practice Tuesday.

He says many of the players couldn't focus on the field because they were thinking about their brother suffering off the field.

"I've seen a couple of them say they miss having their brother today. I'm sure they love him and they hope to have him back soon," said Jones.

Jones says Maynard is like a son to him and like a brother to his teammates.

That's why he's so shocked about the shooting.

"He's one of ours. He's one of ours," said Jones. "He means a great deal to us. He's one of the best players on the team so of course he's a concern to us. But even if he was one of the worst players, he'd still be a concern of mine."

Maynard's friends and neighbors are also concerned.

Cameron Lovett, who's spent years playing sports alongside Maynard, says he and his buddies are really worried about their friend's wellbeing.

"Brian is a good friend," said Lovett. "He is a very good person. "These days, everybody is getting shot and stuff. There's a lot of stuff going on. We all just need to get together and build together as a team."

Kirk says despite serious injuries, Maynard is expected to survive. Maynard is recovering at Baptist Medical in Winston-Salem.

Coach Jones says they're preparing to play the season without Maynard which he says would definitely a tough blow for everyone connected to High Point Central.

As for Maynard, at the time of this report, he remains in the hospital.

Coach Jones says Bryan was nursing his way back after a knee injury and is now sidelined again.

The High Point Central Bisons take on North Davidson this Friday night.
