High Point 2.0 Project to Serve as 'Rebirth' of Downtown

High Point 2.0 is an $83 million development project that will feature a hotel, apartments, offices, shops, and a grand plaza.

HIGH POINT — Leaders in High Point say a new development will lead to a fundamental shift in how High Pointers live. In April, the city broke ground on a new baseball stadium and now we've learned how the area surrounding it will come to life.

High Point 2.0 is an $83 million development project that will feature a hotel, apartments, offices, shops, and a grand plaza.

“I feel like this is the first phase for the rebirth of downtown High Point,” said Mayor Jay Wagner.

At a news conference announcing the details, Mayor Wagner described High Point's downtown as having no sense of place, no excitement and no ability to attract people and companies. No growth, he said, means no increase in property values, in turn, forcing an increase in taxes. He says this project will boost property values, which is a plus but not the whole point.

“The why of this is creating a place that brings all of High Point together. A place where we can have a better quality of life, the place where we can come together and get to know each other. Ultimately this is about people and about how we live in High Point,” said Mayor Wagner.

The project will create 700 jobs: 375 construction jobs to build it and 310 permanent positions.

Construction is scheduled to run from this fall through spring of 2021.
