Homeless Veteran Will Get A Place To Call Home Thanks To Tiny House

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- A pillow, a bed, fresh linens, and a roof over your head it’s something easily taken for granted. But for some who have nothing, it’s everything.

A homeless Triad veteran will soon have a place to call home all thanks to a local church. The congregation at Peace United Church of Christ in Greensboro have been working on a patriotic mission to help a homeless veteran put a roof over their head so they can get back on their feet. They’re building a Tiny House which is of an extremely humble size and quite compact. However, it’s just enough for someone who has fallen on hard times.

"The tiny house will be the location from which the homeless veteran can get his or her life together," said Reverend Tom Warren, the pastor at Peace United Church of Christ. The church members have volunteered several Saturdays building the Tiny House in the church's parking lot.

The house is aimed exclusively at getting a homeless veteran off the streets. A prototype of the Tiny House sits on the front lawn of the church. The church's tiny house is a little larger than the prototype.

"They will live in that house, it will be a safe and very comfortable place to live and be very different from the homeless shelters which have kind of a limit on how long you can stay," said Rev. Warren.

The church came up with the idea and then a member who was a war veteran footed the $20,000 bill. That amount covers the cost of the entire project. The new tiny home will be permanently located on a lot with other tiny homes on Casey Street in Greensboro.

"It is a way for our community to thank them for their service, recognizing that we all have personal struggles and we all need a helping hand up. We hope that the Tiny House is that helping hand up," concluded Warren.

The house is not finished yet but workers will continue on Saturday, July 7th. They will connect the house to utility services. The church is working with the Tiny House of Greensboro to identify a homeless veteran to live in the house.
