PASQUOTANK COUNTY, N.C. (WVEC) -- Four inmates charged with the murders of correctional institution employees on October 12 made their first appearances in court on Monday.

North Carolina Department of Public Safety officers took Mikel Brady, Wisezah D. Buckman, Seth J. Frazier, and Jonathan M. Monk to the Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Office where each man was served with warrants for First Degree Murder (2 counts).

Investigators said the group killed Justin Smith and Veronica Darden when the inmates tried to escape from the prison. Smith and Darden worked at the correctional institution. Several other employees were hurt.

The men, who are being held without bond, briefly appeared before a judge before officers took them back to the prisons in which the inmates currently are staying.
