'It Means The World To Me,' Greensboro Woman Finally Moves Into Renovated Home Damaged In Tornado

Just in time for Christmas, Emma Long is able to move back into the home she spent the last 35 years in.

A woman who barely escaped the April tornado in Greensboro can move back into her home.

Since the tornado hit, Emma Long has been staying with family.

The tornado sent two trees crashing through the roof of her home. She escaped harm just moments before.

"It just wasn't my time because when that whole room went off it could've been all over for me, but God take care of me," Long said.

Although she was safe, her home suffered severe damage. The roof needed to be repaired, the outside needed to be repainted, and the entire upstairs area needed to be gutted.

"When I first came out after the storm, I didn't think it really could be repaired," Long said.

But volunteers with the Greensboro Builders Association and Community Housing Solutions (CHS) thought differently.

"We fixed her structure of this home from the tornado damage, but what we really did was work on giving her her home back and making it a home again," Jim Sandknop with CHS said.

Volunteers in both organizations spent the last few months renovating Long's home. This week,  Long saw the fruits of their labor.

"It took my breath. When I walk through the door, I was so happy and proud and think people care that much to know to donate different things that I needed," Long said.

Not only did people donate their time to work on the home, all the furniture and even the appliances were donated from people in the community.

"I lost everything, but I gained a lot," Long said.
