'It's Just Senseless': Dad Mourns 16-Year-Old Daughter Who Died After Being Shot

While Zoe's family is forced to face the horrible reality that she's no longer with them, they're left with all the love and memories she shared. Her father said she dreamed of being a model.

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Police and loved ones are still looking for answers after 16-year-old Sateria Fleming, or Zoe, as her friends call her, was shot Monday night in Greensboro.

"It's just senseless," says Forrest Fleming, Zoe's father. "Senseless to take a 16-year-old's life."

Police say Zoe was walking along the 4400 block of Baker Avenue when she was shot around 9 p.m. She was taken to Moses Cone Hospital where she was in critical condition. Tuesday night, her father says she was declared brain dead. She was on life support until she passed away.

"I don't know where you go," he says. "This is uncharted territory for me, I don't have a reference point of a child dying so when you don't have a reference point it's all new."

Police are still trying to figure out exactly what happened. Monday night's shooting led them to a vehicle they found driving on Battleground Avenue Tuesday afternoon. The car tried to get away when police tried to pull it over in the shopping plaza off Edney Ridge Road. When it finally stopped, two men tried to run. One of them, Courtney Baskins, 22, crossed the road and pulled a gun and Greensboro Police Cpl. Dwayne Diaz fired at the Baskins. Baskins was taken to the hospital, where police say he is stable condition. Baskins is charged with Felony Assault on a Law Enforcement Official and remains a person of interest in Fleming's death.

Police also arrested Hajji Dequan Johnson, 20, the other man who tried to run from the vehicle. Johnson was arrested for Carrying A Concealed Weapon and Resisting a Public Officer. Police do not think he was involved Fleming's shooting.

The car's driver, Channay Ericka Morehead, 27, remained in the car and was arrested. She's charged with First Degree Murder in Fleming's death.

While Zoe's family is forced to face the horrible reality that she's no longer with them, they're left with all the love and memories she shared. Her father said she dreamed of being a model.

"That was something she was so excited about and something she was so looking forward to and just to know that that won't happen, it hurts," Forrest says.

The community is also coming together for Zoe. Neighbors and friends have put up a memorial where she was shot. They're holding a vigil for her Wednesday night.

"Everybody loves her," her father tells. "She was just a lovable little girl."

Cpl. Diaz was placed on administrative duties after Tuesday's shooting, which is standard protocol. Greensboro Police Chief Wayne Scott says he believes his officer did everything according to their procedures, but police still have to conduct an internal investigation.
