Man Charged with DWI in Head-on Crash into Davidson County School Bus

Chad Thomas Kearney was given multiple charges, including driving with an open container and Driving While Intoxicated.

WELCOME, N.C. — The man who caused a head-on crash with school bus in Welcome on Monday afternoon was driving drunk, North Carolina State Highway Patrol confirmed. 

Chad Thomas Kearney of Pfafftown was charged with: 

  • Driving with open alcohol container
  • DWI
  • Careless and Reckless Driving
  • Driving While License Revoked
  • Not Wearing a Seat Belt
  • Littering

Tabitha Broadway with Davidson County Schools confirmed the accident happened on Old U.S. 52 near Critcher and Tall Pines Road. 

Broadway said the three elementary students were on the bus weren't hurt. Kearney, 28, is still in the hospital as of Tuesday morning. His injuries aren't known.
