Several students were taken to the hospital after a school bus overturned in Alexander County Monday morning.

According to North Carolina Highway Patrol, emergency crews responded to a crash on Icard Ridge Road near Bulldog Lane around 7:30 a.m. The crash happened near West Alexander Middle School near the Bethlehem community.

The Alexander County Schools superintendent confirmed to WCNC that more than a dozen students on the bus were taken to the hospital. Six of the students went back to school after being treated. In total, 13 students and the driver were taken to the hospital.

The bus was going to West Alexander Middle. The cause of the crash hasn't been determined by investigators.
