GRANITE FALLS, N.C. — Police in Granite Falls, NC are searching for a driver who reportedly left a couple trapped inside their SUV for nine hours after it went down an embankment.

The accident happened around 6:00 a.m. after an aquaintance ran off a 25-foot embankment flipping the SUV over on Executive Park Drive just off of US 321.

According to the couple, the acquaintance climbed out of the vehicle and told them he was going to get help and would return. He never returned, they told police.

Officers were finally alerted to the accident around 3:15 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. The couple told officers they had no recollection as to what happened the rest of the day until 3 p.m.

That's when they woke up and eventually forced their way out of the SUV and walked to get help. Both were treated at the scene and released.

The couple only know the acquaintance as “Shawn.” If anyone has information about this incident, please call Chief Chris Jenkins at (828) 396-3358 or contact him by email at chief@granitefallspolicenc.com.
